Germinal by Emile Zola

I bought this in the Jane Adams bookshop in Champaign. I’d often wanted to read it. I think it is a classic and would like to read it again. I’d also like to see the GĂ©rard Depardieu film version.

A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov

I’ve read this many many times; it is one of my favourite books. The descriptions of the Caucasus, and compelling disaffected hero probably impress me. Pechorin seems like the detached observer, aware of his own failings, and a prisoner of his own will.

I liked the ‘Fatalist’ story, the idea that you can see in someone’s face when it is their time to die.

I’ve always wondered where it is actually set, other than the vague description of the Caucasus I wonder
