The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge by Paul Preston
I read this book about the Spanish Civil War on vacation in Spain. It’s well written and researched. I remember a description of a nationalist pilot ‘get up, have breakfast, take off, machine gun the enemy, land, play golf, and have cocktails on the verandah’. I thought at the time his criticism of Orwell for ‘failing to see the big picture’ seemed harsh, but maybe it is justified. I’ve read other books by Paul Preston and clearly he is an authority.
