Defend the Realm: The Authorized History of MI5 by Christopher Andrew

I found this good. It included an interesting insight into post-war British political life.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

I read this on a skiing trip to Switzerland. It is clearly an important classic and very enjoyable, though rather sad. I think most of the characters have rather empty lives, ranging from shallow (Emma Bovary), predatory (Rodolphe Boulanger), devious (Monsieur Lheureux), to pathetic (Charles Bovary).
