Orientalism: Western Concepts of the Orient by Edward Said

I decided to read this after a visit to Istanbul. The criticism it gives of
western attitudes to the Middle East did not necessarily convince me. It seemed a pity because clearly there are many valid criticisms, it was just these criticisms didn’t work (for me). The counter arguments listed in Wikipedia seemed to have more substance.

L`Assommoir by Emile Zola

This might be my favourite book of all time. I badly need to read it again.

I like it because it is so vividly descriptive, there is a wedding feast that goes on for pages, you can almost taste the food and drink and really feel like you were there.

I also like it because the descent/decline via alcohol seems very real.

I’ve ordered it in French.
