1984 by George Orwell

A classic story which I have read many times. I gave it to one of my sons and ended up re-reading it myself.

I don’t think I can add much other than to say that it’s brilliant.

Stalingrad by Antony Beevor

My son gave this to me for Christmas. I had actually read it before, but obfuscated when he asked: “I’ve not read this copy”. Please don’t tell him.

I suspect that Stalingrad is a relatively easy thing to write about, the sequence of events is relatively linear, and it is of course all very grand. I don’t mean to take anything away from the book which is well-written and very readable. A classic tale.
